1Q 2021 Coming to a Close

Monday, March 29, 2021 – A confluence of recent drivers and themes appeared to quiet volatility in U.S. equity markets this past week as the S&P 500 rallied strongly on Friday to close the week at an all-time high. The markets enjoyed what appears to be a tempering in new U.S. Coronavirus cases leading to optimism over the potential impact of the vaccines while Europe continued to deploy lockdowns.

On the economic front, the week brought a slew of mixed but mostly disappointing releases that included a decline in both Existing and New Home Sales, lower than expected Durable Good Orders and a drop in Personal Income and Real Consumer Spending. Equity markets appeared to benefit from the settling of longer-term rates and will look to more details forthcoming at the end of March in what President Biden and his administration have dubbed the “Build Back Better” economic plan.

For the week, the DJIA gained 444.91 points to close at 33,072.88, the S&P 500 gained 61.44 to close at a new all-time high of 3,974.54 and the Nasdaq dropped 76.51 points to close at 13,138.73.

ETFG Quant Movers - Those ETFs who have had the largest weekly change in their ETFG Quant Total Scores.

ETFG Weekly Quant Winners: The three biggest gainers in their ETFG Total Quant Scores were found in the iShares Evolved U.S. Media and Entertainment ETF (IEME) which gained 14.06 points to 53.85, the Barclays ETN+ Shiller CAPETM ETN (CAPE) which added 13.51 points to 66.89 and the SPDR S&P Aerospace & Defense ETF (XAR) which picked up 12.06 points to close the week with an ETFG Quant Total Score of 51.93.

ETFG Weekly Quant Losers: The three biggest drops in their respective ETF Quant Total Scores were found in the ETRACS Linked to the NYSE Pickens Core Midstream Index (PYPE) which lost 14.59 points to 48.23, the Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF (FTEC) which dropped 11.26 points to 33.24 and the Reality Shares DIVCON Dividend Defender ETF (DFND) which shaved 10.17 points from its ETFG Quant Total Score to close the week at 37.42.

Spring Arrives with a Backup in Rates

Monday, March 22, 2021 – U.S. equity markets felt the pressure of the continuing rise in rates, a mix of economic news and plans for the first major federal tax increase in almost thirty years. For the week, the DJIA shaved 150.67 points to close at 32,627.97, the S&P 500, after closing at an all-time high on Wednesday, lost 30.24 points to close at 3,913.10 and the Nasdaq lost 104.63 points to close at 13,215.24.

The markets appeared most focused on the Federal Reserve meeting and the rise in yield for 10 year U.S. treasuries as they cracked 1.75% during the week. Despite a rally following the Fed Meeting, rising rates and a steepening yield curve seem to represent the primary market concerns. While the Fed appears to have adopted a wait-and-see stance on potential inflation, more details around the Infrastructure Plan should be imminent with Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, testifying before the House this week. The same storylines surrounding the reopening of the economy persist and remain fluid as vaccinations are distributed and regions begin to relax Covid protocols.

ETFG Quant Movers - Those ETFs who have had the largest weekly change in their ETFG Quant Total Scores.

ETFG Weekly Quant Winners: The three biggest gainers in their ETFG Total Quant Scores were found in the Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF (FTEC) which gained 13.15 points to 44.50, the Invesco Variable Rate Preferred ETF (VRP) which added 8.44 points to 59.25 and the Amplify Online Retail ETF (IBUY) which climbed 8.10 points to an ETFG Total Quant Score of 67.30.

ETFG Weekly Quant Losers: The three biggest drops in their respective ETF Quant Total Scores were found in the John Hancock Multifactor Financials ETF (JHMF) which dropped 10.08 points to 41.25, the ELEMENTS SPECTRUM ETN (EEH) losing 8.73 points and the Barclays Women in Leadership ETN (WIL) which retrenched 7.49 points in its ETFG Total Quant Score.

Impact of Economic Reopening

Monday, March 15, 2021 – Last week saw strong market performance, as the major, U.S. equity indexes posted gains including the DJIA and S&P 500 closing Friday at new record highs. While volatility has increased over the last several weeks, overall market sentiment appears to be in a tug-of-war between the recent increase in rates and the positive potential impact of the economic reopening, with equity markets favoring the latter.

Last week’s strong equity performance seemed to fall right in line with this dynamic and continue to emanate from optimism around the economy forging through the pandemic and getting open again. A big part of this optimism was fueled on Thursday by President Biden signing the latest fiscal stimulus package valued at $1.9 trillion, along with his announcement that by May 1st there should be ample supplies of vaccines for all adults.

Further fueling equity markets was Wednesday’s release of a softer than expected consumer price index (CPI) increase of 0.4% in February. St. Patrick’s Day on Wednesday will also be the date of the FOMC meeting and much speculation regarding the timing of the first Fed hike in interest rates which chatter has referenced 4Q of 2022.

For the week, the DJIA gained 1,282.34 points to close at a new high of 32,778.64, the S&P 500 picked up 101.40 points to also close at a new high of 3,943.34 and the Nasdaq wrapped up the week with a gain of 399.72 points to close at 13,319.86.

ETFG Quant Movers - Those ETFs who have had the largest weekly change in their ETFG Quant Total Scores.

ETFG Weekly Quant Winners: The three biggest gainers in their ETFG Total Quant Scores were found in the Global X US Preferred ETF (PFFD) which picked up 14.04 points to 47.50, the Barclays Women in Leadership ETN (WIL) gaining 10.37 points to 65.39 and the Vanguard FTSE All-World ex-US ETF (VEU) which added 8.48 points to close the week with an ETFG Quant Total Score of 43.76.

ETFG Weekly Quant Losers: The three biggest drops in their respective ETF Quant Total Scores were found in the Reality Shares DIVCON Leaders Dividend ETF (LEAD) which lost 13.78 points to 39.00, the Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF (FTEC) which shaved 13.22 points to 31.36 and the First Trust Horizon Managed Volatility Domestic ETF (HUSV) which gave back 12.77 points to close the week with an ETFG Total Quant Score of 45.78.

Vaccinations + Stimulus

Monday, March 8, 2021 - Last week’s equity markets were bumpy and spent most of the week continuing the weakness of the previous week before a solid rebound on Friday brought two of the three major U.S. equity indexes into positive territory for the week. Investors continue to feel the impact of the recent increase in bond yields and appear anxious around the timing of a higher rate environment on the horizon.

The weekend brought big news with the first reflected in reports that the U.S. is now averaging over 2M Coronavirus vaccinations per day with the expectation that this rate will continue to increase as the recently approved for emergency use, singe-dose, J&J vaccination adds to the run rate. President Biden stated last week that the U.S. will have enough vaccines for every adult by the end of May.

The second big piece of news came Saturday with the Senate passing the $1.9 trillion stimulus package which includes funding for stimulus checks, vaccine distribution, and school re-openings. It will be interesting to see how the equity markets react this week to both pieces of news offset by the pressure being felt in the last few weeks from higher rates as the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield sits just above 1.5% and is up slightly over 65 basis points since the start of the year.

For the week, the DJIA gained 563.93 to close at 31,496.30, the S&P 500, which on Monday had its largest gain (2.4%) since June 2020, gained 30.79 to close at 3,841.94 and the Nasdaq lost 272.20 to close at 12,920.15.

Johnson & Johnson COVID Vaccine Approved

Monday, March 1, 2021 - In big news over the weekend, the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19, one-dose vaccine received approval and is expected to begin distribution later this week. This may prove supportive for the markets which experienced a volatile last week, ending with weekly losses in all of the major U.S. equity indices.

Despite optimism in recent weeks stemming from the potential for new fiscal stimulus, the Fed’s easy-money policies and the vaccine rollout, equities appeared reactive to the recent, sharp rise in bond yields as the 10-year Treasury broke through 1.50% on Thursday. Investors now seem concerned that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates earlier than previously expected due to concerns around inflation and its impact on future economic growth.

For the week, the DJIA lost 561.95 points to close at 30,932.37, the S&P 500 dropped 95.56 to 3,811.15 and the Nasdaq closed at 13,192.35 shaving 682.12 points for the week.

ETFG Quant Movers - Those ETFs who have had the largest weekly change in their respective, overall ETFG Quant ratings.

ETFG Weekly Quant Winners: The three biggest gainers in their ETFG Total Quant Scores were found in the Fidelity MSCI Consumer Discretionary Index ETF (FDIS) up 10.98 points to 51.77, the SPDR MSCI EAFE StrategicFactors ETF (QEFA) up 10.44 points to 44.06 and the WBI Power Factor High Dividend ETF (WBIY) which gained 10.21 to a Total ETFG Quant Total Score of 47.11.
